How to Change a Fuel Water Separator

1、Before you start collecting, you need the right kit. If your boat is at sea, you will find that there is a clear plastic basin (if available) on board that will collect the strainer. On boat engines it usually refers to an aluminum filter element (for gas) or one equipped with a clear glass or plastic filter element (for diesel) to collect the strainer. If your boat is sailing and you won't be exposed to any oil, you can use a disposable strainer to collect the oil.

2、Open the hatch to ensure ventilation. Close the fuel valve on the fuel tank and cut off the supply hose at the installation location, then drain its contents. Alternatively, plug the line by inserting the bolt and securing it with a hose clamp.

3、Above the water in the bilge, between the tank and the engine, stands a main engine (or, in the case of a boat, a detonating ball). Water pipes must lead to the engine and oil tank without knots or sharp bends.

Drill a pilot hole at the fixed location and seal the hole with sealant. Spray sealant on the fixed position and fix it with stainless steel self-tapping screws. If it is on the side of the hull, affix a painted plywood in place with epoxy glue.

Drill, seal and tighten as above.

4、Install the fuel fitting of the filter with thread sealant and apply some oil to the gasket or o-ring of the filter element and inspection bowl.

5、Connect the hose from the tank to the "in" port and the engine to the "out" port.

6、Start the engine. Check for leaks at fast idle.
