Fuel/Diesel Filter

A Fuel/Diesel Filter is a filter used to screen out foreign particles or liquids from the fuel. Most internal combustion engines use a fuel filter, in order to protect the components in the fuel system.

Filters for foreign particles

Unfiltered fuel may contain several kinds of contamination, for example paint chips and dirt that has entered the fuel tank while filling, or rust caused by moisture in a steel tank. If these substances are not removed before the fuel enters the system, they will cause rapid wear and failure of the fuel pump and injectors.

The filters are normally made into cartridges containing a filter paper.Fuel filters need to be maintained or replaced at regular intervals.

Considerations for filter selection

● Filtration efficiency: Choose the appropriate filtration efficiency according to the air quality requirements of the application. Generally speaking, the higher the filtration efficiency, the better the effect of removing particles, but it may also bring higher energy consumption and replacement costs.

● Range of particle sizes: Different filters have different filtering effects on particle sizes of particles. According to the actual need, choose the filter that can remove particles in the target size range.

● Service life and maintenance cost: Consider the service life and replacement cycle of the filter, as well as the maintenance cost. Some high-efficiency filters, while effective, may require more frequent replacement and maintenance.

● Compatibility: Ensure that the selected filter is compatible with existing systems or equipment to avoid problems during installation and use.

Filters for foreign liquids

Some diesel engines use a bowl-like design to collect water in the bottom of the filter (as diesel floats on top of water). The water can then be drained off by opening a valve in the bottom of the bowl and letting it run out, until only the fuel remains.

1.Classified according to the installation method:

● Suction filter: installed at the suction port of the oil pump, used to filter the liquid before entering the oil pump.

● Oil return filter: installed in the return oil of the hydraulic system, used to filter the liquid returned from the system.

● Pipeline filter: installed in the pipeline, used to filter the liquid flowing through the pipeline.

2.Classified according to performance:

● Coarse filter: capable of filtering out impurities larger than 100μm.

● Ordinary filter: Filters out impurities of 10 to 100μm.

● Precision filter: It can filter out impurities of 5 to 10μm.

● Extra fine filter: It can filter out impurities of 1～5μm and even smaller impurities.
