What does a fuel water separator do?

A fuel water separator is an important part of any boat's fuel system. By separating water and impurities from your fuel, it ensures that your engine runs smoothly and efficiently. It also helps to prolong the life of your engine by preventing corrosion and other damage caused by water and debris.

How often should I change the fuel water separator on my boat?

Fuel water filters on bay boats should be changed once a year or 100 engine hours. Given the harsher bilge environment of larger boats the fuel water separator filters should be inspected every six months. Filters are cheap and changing them regularly is advisable.

Do fuel water separators go bad?

Marine engine manufacturers and technicians advise storing any boat with the fuel tank almost full, leaving just a little capacity to accommodate expansion of the fuel if the temperature warms.

As a crew member, you naturally love water. But you definitely don't want water in your boat's fuel.

If water gets into the fuel, it can cause a lot of problems for the engine. And, when water mixes with the ethanol mixture, it undergoes a process called "phase separation," which creates sludge in the fuel tank and can lead to engine damage.

Use a clear glass bottle to check for water in your fuel. Pour water from the fuel filter into the glass bottle and let it sit for a few minutes.

If there is no water in the fuel, the liquid in the glass bottle will have the same pale yellow color. If there is water, the gas will float to the surface so you will see a bubble at the bottom of the tank. You can siphon the water out of the bottom of the tank or take it to a professional.

If phase separation has occurred when the water and ethanol were mixed, the bubble at the bottom will be gelatinous. If this is the case, contact an environmental service company to dispose of the fuel properly.

If you find water in your fuel, find out how the water got into the tank. Possible causes include a poorly sealed fuel tank cap or a broken vent.
